THE HOUSE · OUR STORY

EVERY COLLECTION HAS A BEGINNING. EVERY STORY HAS ITS TURNING POINTS.

Some passions never really disappear. They simply wait for the right moment to come back into our lives.

From my childhood Barbie memories to the creation of LaFlorette Doll Society, here's how a little collection became a whole universe.

01 — THE EARLY YEARS

THE 1980s & 1990s

A CHILDHOOD FULL OF BARBIES.

I was born in 1982 in Ivory Coast, and I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by Barbie dolls, fabulous outfits and endless possibilities.

In 1987, my family moved to France, and that's when I received my very first Barbie and Ken dolls. If my memory serves me right, one of them was Perfume Pretty Barbie, followed by Tropical Kira (#2056), Tropical Skipper (#1021) and Tropical Ken (#1020). And, of course, many more dolls, outfits and accessories soon joined the collection!

I loved imagining their lives, inventing stories and creating little adventures for my growing cast of characters. I still remember taking my dolls for rides in their fabulous white Ferrari Convertible (#3136), their hair blowing in the breeze. Pure Barbie glamour!

Of course, not every doll had the same privileges. Some were strictly for display — look, but don't touch, Mother's orders! — while others were actually allowed to join the fun. Hurray!

But whether they were carefully displayed or loved through countless imaginary adventures, they all became part of my childhood memories.

Little did I know that those fabulous little plastic characters would leave such a lasting impression on my life… or that one day, I'd be welcoming them back into it!

02 — THE LOST COLLECTION

THE EARLY 2000s

SOME MEMORIES ARE HARD TO REPLACE.

In 2000, I turned eighteen — officially an adult in France! For my birthday, my father asked me what present would make me happy.

My answer? “The Bride Barbie.”

Yes, even at eighteen, Barbie was still very much on my birthday wishlist!

But later that year, my grandmother in France passed away. Before selling the family house, my father cleared out the attic, where my entire childhood Barbie collection had been stored.

And just like that, everything was gone.

All those dolls, beautiful outfits and accessories that had accompanied me throughout my childhood disappeared without anyone asking whether I wanted to keep them.

What hurt wasn't just losing my collection. It was the feeling, once again, that my wishes and my voice didn't really matter within my family.

For years, those dolls existed only in my memories. I remembered their faces, their outfits and the wonderful adventures we'd shared.

But little did I know…

Our story wasn't over yet.

03 — THE INSPIRATION

2020

THEN CAME GRANDMA GETS REAL.

In 2020, COVID-19 turned the whole world upside down. We were all stuck at home, living through lockdowns and trying to find ways to keep ourselves entertained.

And, well… like so many people, I may have spent a little too much time scrolling through the internet! 🙂

That's how I discovered an Instagram account called Grandma Gets Real.

She was funny, creative and, most importantly, she had recreated her entire family using Barbie and Ken dolls, giving them personalities, relationships and a whole miniature life of their own.

I was absolutely amazed!

I loved everything about her little world: the characters, the creativity, the humour and, of course, the storytelling.

But there was something else that caught my attention.

I suddenly realised just how much the Barbie universe had changed since my childhood. There were now so many different skin tones, body types, faces and hairstyles. Dolls that looked like real people, in all their wonderful diversity!

The possibilities seemed endless.

At the time, I was simply enjoying her adventures, discovering this incredible new world of dolls and occasionally dreaming about what I could create myself.

Little did I know that Grandma Gets Real was planting a tiny seed in my imagination… one that would eventually change everything!

04 — THE REDISCOVERY

JUNE 2022

IT ALL STARTED AGAIN.

After years away from the Barbie world, I was rediscovering just how much dolls had evolved.

New faces, different body types, skin tones, hairstyles… and endless possibilities for creating unique characters!

Inspired by Grandma Gets Real, I decided it was time to bring my own little family to life in miniature.

I finally reached out to her, and she couldn't have been kinder! She generously shared her advice, helped me understand where to begin and gave me the confidence to dive into this wonderful world of doll collecting.

And so, my first three characters were born!

Three characters. One little family. A whole lot of imagination!

That was the plan. The original plan, anyway…

But you know how these things go.

Three dolls were never going to be enough, were they? 😉

05 — THE FIRST MEMBERS

2022

MEET THE FOUNDING FAMILY.

LaFlorette Aubrey, LeBru Lasalle and Ines Aubrey.

My daughter, my husband and myself, reimagined in 1/6 scale.

Ines Aubrey, inspired by my daughter, was created using Barbie Tokyo Sports Baseball (#GJL77) and Barbie Boxer (#GJL64).

LaFlorette Aubrey, my miniature alter ego, came to life thanks to Barbie Doctor (#GYT29) and Barbie Signature BMR1959 (#GHT94).

And finally, LeBru Lasalle, inspired by my husband, originally started out as Ken Signature Looks #5 (#GTD90) before evolving into a heavily customised version of Ken Dumbledore (#FYM54).

They became the founding family of what would soon grow into a much larger Society.

Friends began joining the adventure. Then came entirely new characters, families, relationships and stories.

Three dolls were clearly never going to be enough!

06 — THE BARBIE FANTASY CLUB

DECEMBER 27, 2022

HELLO, DOLL COMMUNITY!

On December 27, 2022, I officially joined the online doll community by launching my Instagram account:

@laflorette_barbiefantasyclub

What started as a little personal project quickly became an incredible opportunity to meet fellow collectors, discover extraordinarily talented artists and share my own doll photography.

Before I knew it, new friendships, creative discoveries, inspiring conversations and wonderful people had become part of my everyday life.

And just like that, the Barbie Fantasy Club finally had a place to share its adventures with the world!

I also want to give a very special shout-out to the French doll community, who welcomed me with open arms and made me feel right at home.

And especially to Hugo, my dear bestie behind Pictures Love Barbie, who has helped, supported and encouraged me in so many beautiful and meaningful ways.

Some people inspire your creativity. Others become part of your story. And sometimes, if you're lucky, they become wonderful friends along the way.

Thank you for being part of mine! 💗

07 — THE CREATIVE ADVENTURE

2023 AND BEYOND

A WHOLE WORLD IN MINIATURE.

Doll collecting soon opened the door to an entirely new creative universe.

Photography, dioramas, roomboxes, miniature furniture, fashion, accessories and handmade creations all became part of the adventure.

I started experimenting with miniature sets, creating photographic series and developing more elaborate stories for my characters.

Along the way, I discovered an extraordinary community of talented designers, miniature makers and photographers whose work continues to inspire me.

One discovery led to another. And every new idea seemed to open the door to ten more!

And then, in 2023, another big adventure began: we moved back to Reunion Island!

An absolutely wonderful decision for our lives… but perhaps not the most practical one for my doll collection! 😂

As much as I love living on this beautiful island, being a doll collector here can be quite a challenge. Finding specific models is difficult, shipping costs can be ridiculously high, and international deliveries aren't always straightforward.

But luckily, I have a secret weapon: my wonderful daughter, Ines!

While continuing her studies in mainland France, she became my precious little connection to the world of doll shopping.

Thanks to her, I could keep hunting for treasures on Vinted and ordering new releases and collector dolls from Mattel Creations. My precious purchases would arrive at her place, and she'd send them all the way to Reunion Island.

Not all superheroes wear capes. Some receive Barbie parcels for their mothers!

MERCI Inès ! 💗

And just like that, despite the thousands of kilometres between us, the collection kept growing, the creativity kept flowing, and new characters continued to find their way into the Society.

08 — A NEW CHAPTER

2026

FROM BARBIE FANTASY CLUB TO LAFLORETTE DOLL SOCIETY.

What started with a little family of three has grown into a collection of more than 300 dolls, and an entire fictional community filled with characters, families, friendships, love stories and plenty of adventures!

And as this little world kept growing, I realised it was time to give it a proper home of its own.

Instagram had been a wonderful place to share my photographs, meet incredible people and introduce my characters to the world. But I wanted to go further.

I needed a place where I could document my collection, preserve the history of each Doll Model, introduce the members of my fictional Society and bring together all the creative projects that had become part of this adventure.

And with this new chapter came another big decision: it was time for a new name!

The Barbie Fantasy Club had grown beyond Barbie herself. My collection now included dolls from different brands, and my creative universe had developed an identity of its own.

And so, LaFlorette Doll Society was born!

With laflorettedollsociety.com, I finally have a place to bring everything together: collecting, research, photography, miniatures and storytelling.

A personal collection. A creative studio. A fictional Society. And a tribute to all the wonderful people who continue to inspire me along the way.

More than just a website, LaFlorette Doll Society is a living archive of my collection and a creative home for the characters and stories I've imagined.

A place to preserve the past, celebrate the present and keep imagining what comes next.

And the best part?

After more than 300 dolls, countless stories and a few slightly unreasonable shopping decisions… I still feel like I'm just getting started!

And believe me, we're only getting started!

TO BE CONTINUED…

THE COLLECTION KEEPS GROWING. THE STORIES KEEP UNFOLDING.

Every doll has a story. Every story deserves to be told.
