BARBIE FAMILY & FRIENDS

EVERY ICON NEEDS A LITTLE COMPANY!

Barbie may be the star of her own universe, but she certainly hasn’t been living in it alone!

Since her debut in 1959, Mattel has introduced an incredible cast of family members, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, rivals and unforgettable personalities who have helped bring Barbie’s world to life.

From Ken’s arrival in 1961 and Midge’s introduction in 1963 to the friendships that shaped the following decades, each new character has added another chapter to Barbie’s story.

And believe me, there’s been plenty of drama along the way! Love stories, breakups, reunions, unexpected friendships and even a few controversies… Who said dolls couldn’t have complicated lives? 🙂

Over the years, some characters have disappeared, others have returned with completely new looks, and their personalities and relationships have sometimes changed between doll collections, books, movies and animated series.

This page is my little guide to the characters who have shaped Barbie’s universe over the decades. Not an exhaustive family tree or an official Mattel character encyclopedia, but a journey through the familiar faces, friendships and stories that have made Barbie’s world so fascinating.

Because every doll has a story. And sometimes, the best stories begin with the people around her!

01 — THE ROBERTS FAMILY

SIX PERSONALITIES. ONE VERY FAMOUS FAMILY!

Behind the world's most famous fashion doll is a family with a story of its own.

Over the decades, the Roberts family has evolved through dolls, books, movies and animated series. New sisters have appeared, familiar faces have changed, and even the parents have developed entirely new personalities and careers.

Let's meet the family members who have become the heart of Barbie's world!

Portrait of Barbara Millicent Roberts

1959 · THE ORIGINAL BARBIE

BARBARA MILLICENT ROBERTS

THE GIRL WHO STARTED IT ALL.

Introduced on March 9, 1959, Barbie is the eldest daughter of George and Margaret Roberts and the most famous member of the family.

Originally presented as a teenage fashion model from Willows, Wisconsin, Barbie has since explored an extraordinary range of careers, interests and adventures.

From astronaut and doctor to entrepreneur and filmmaker, she has spent decades proving that a doll can imagine countless possibilities.

As the eldest sister, Barbie is often portrayed as confident, caring and always ready to encourage Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea to follow their dreams.

And let's be honest: being the world's most famous doll while keeping up with three younger sisters must be quite a full-time job!

Portrait of Skipper Roberts

1964 · THE TEENAGE SISTER

SKIPPER ROBERTS

A LITTLE REBELLIOUS. A LOT OF PERSONALITY.

Introduced in 1964, Skipper was the first younger sister to join Barbie's family.

Originally designed as a younger companion for Barbie, she has undergone several transformations over the decades, gradually evolving into the teenager we know today.

Modern versions of Skipper are particularly recognisable for their dark hair, often featuring colourful streaks, and their more casual, contemporary fashion.

In animated adventures such as Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures, she's portrayed as independent, tech-savvy and passionate about music, gadgets and creative projects.

She even took centre stage in the 2023 film Barbie: Skipper and the Big Babysitting Adventure.

Because being Barbie's little sister doesn't mean you can't be the star of your own story!

Portrait of Stacie Roberts

EARLY 1990s · THE SPORTY SISTER

STACIE ROBERTS

ALWAYS READY FOR THE NEXT ADVENTURE!

Stacie joined the Roberts family in the early 1990s, although her introduction came with a little naming confusion!

A doll originally presented as Kelly in a 1990 wedding-themed set was later associated with the character who became known as Stacie.

Positioned between Skipper and Chelsea in today's family, Stacie is the energetic, adventurous sister who loves sports, challenges and outdoor activities.

In modern Barbie stories, she's often portrayed as athletic, competitive and determined, with a passion for trying new things.

She even became the central character of the 2024 animated film Barbie and Stacie to the Rescue.

One thing's for sure: if there's a competition happening at the Dreamhouse, Stacie probably signed up first!

Portrait of Chelsea Roberts

2011 · THE YOUNGEST SISTER

CHELSEA ROBERTS

SMALL IN SIZE. BIG ON IMAGINATION!

Chelsea is the youngest of the four Roberts sisters in Barbie's modern family.

Introduced under the Chelsea name in 2011, she followed the earlier Kelly and Shelly dolls associated with Barbie's youngest sister.

Known for her playful personality, curiosity and boundless imagination, Chelsea sees the world as a place filled with adventures waiting to happen.

Whether she's inventing games, spending time with animals or exploring imaginary worlds, she always finds a way to turn an ordinary day into something extraordinary.

Chelsea has also enjoyed her own adventures, including the animated movie Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday.

Never underestimate the youngest sister. She might just be the one running the whole Dreamhouse!

Portrait of George Roberts

1960s · THE FATHER · INTRODUCED IN STORIES

GEORGE ROBERTS

THE FAMILY MAN BEHIND THE CAMERA.

George Roberts is the father of Barbie, Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea, and the husband of Margaret Roberts.

Although George was mentioned in Barbie stories as early as the 1960s, he remained a relatively discreet character for many years.

In earlier stories, he was described as an engineer. His role was later reimagined in Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures, where he works as a documentary filmmaker.

Creative, affectionate and sometimes a little quirky, George enjoys spending time with his family and supporting his daughters' many adventures.

His modern portrayal brings a warm, humorous presence to the Roberts household.

Four daughters, a busy Dreamhouse and a camera to capture it all. Now that's what I call family life!

Portrait of Margaret Rawlins Roberts

1960s · THE MOTHER · INTRODUCED IN STORIES

MARGARET RAWLINS ROBERTS

SMART, CREATIVE AND DEFINITELY IN CHARGE!

Margaret Roberts is Barbie's mother, George's wife and the proud parent of four very different daughters.

Like George, Margaret originally appeared in Barbie's fictional background long before becoming a more visible character in animated stories.

Earlier portrayals presented her primarily as a homemaker, reflecting the conventions of the time.

In Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures, Margaret has a very different role: she's an engineer, bringing creativity and technical expertise to the family.

Supportive, intelligent and resourceful, Margaret encourages her daughters to be independent, curious and confident.

And with Barbie, Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea all under one roof, she certainly has plenty of opportunities to put those problem-solving skills to good use!

Behind every fabulous Dreamhouse, there's a woman who knows how to keep things running!

A LITTLE BARBIE HISTORY — CHRISTIE (1968). Christie was introduced as Barbie's first Black friend, more than a decade before the first Black doll named Barbie arrived in 1980. Her debut remains an important milestone in Barbie's history of representation.

06 — THE MY SCENE UNIVERSE

BIG CITY. BIG FASHION. BIG PERSONALITIES!

In 2002, Mattel introduced My Scene, a Barbie spin-off with a distinctly early-2000s attitude. Inspired by big-city fashion, music and friendship, the original trio — Barbie, Madison and Chelsea — brought a more urban look to the doll aisle, with trend-driven outfits, expressive faces and plenty of personality.

The universe soon grew through new characters, webisodes, online diaries and movies. After the original era came to an end, Mattel brought Barbie, Madison and Chelsea back as collector dolls in 2024 — proof that the Y2K spirit never really went away!
