BARBIE COLLECTIONS & ERAS

SIX DECADES OF FASHION, EVOLUTION AND ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.

Ruth Handler, after seeing her daughter Barbara assigning her dolls adult roles, wished for a more grown-up doll for children to play with, as most toy dolls during the 1950s were modeled after infants. On a trip to Germany with her husband, a co-founder of Mattel, she found Bild Lilli Dolls which became the inspiration for Barbie dolls.

Since her debut in 1959, Barbie has continuously reinvented herself, reflecting changing fashions, cultural influences and new ways of celebrating individuality.

As a collector, I’ve developed my own way of exploring this evolution, dividing Barbie’s history into four eras that help me understand and organise my collection.

These eras reflect my personal interpretation, not an official Mattel classification or a universally recognised collector’s timeline. Other collectors may see things differently, and that’s perfectly fine!

Beyond these historical periods, Barbie’s universe is also filled with collections and product lines, each with its own identity, creative direction and sometimes a little piece of doll history.

So here, I’ll take you through the eras that shaped Barbie’s evolution and introduce some of the collections that have made her world so fascinating to explore.

Every collection tells a different story. This is how I choose to explore mine!

PART ONE — BARBIE THROUGH ERAS

01 — EARLY VINTAGE

1959–1976
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN.
The original Barbie doll from 1959 by Mattel

Barbie’s story began in 1959, when Ruth Handler introduced the first Barbie doll at the New York Toy Fair, wearing her now-iconic black-and-white striped swimsuit.

From the elegant ponytail dolls and sophisticated early fashions to the colourful, experimental styles of the Mod era, Barbie quickly became more than just a fashion doll.

This period also saw her world expand with new friends, careers and personalities, including the introduction of Christie in 1968.

For me, Early Vintage represents the foundations of the Barbie universe: the original designs, the changing fashions and the first chapters of a story that would inspire generations.

02 — SUPERSTAR ERA

1977–2008
THE AGE OF GLAMOUR AND ICONIC MEMORIES.
1977 Superstar Barbie Doll Reproduction by Mattel

In 1977, Superstar Barbie introduced a dazzling new look, with her famous smiling face sculpt, glamorous outfits and sparkling jewellery.

The Superstar aesthetic would become one of Barbie’s most recognisable identities, particularly throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.

Over the following decades, Barbie continued to evolve, embracing new face sculpts, fashion trends, pop culture influences and an expanding world of collectible dolls.

In my personal timeline, I use Superstar Era to bring together this broader period of Barbie history, from the arrival of that unforgettable smile to the years preceding the Fashionistas launch.

And for someone who grew up surrounded by Barbie’s fabulous fashions in the 1980s and 1990s, this era holds a particularly special place in my heart!

03 — FASHIONISTAS

2009–2015
A NEW GENERATION OF FASHION AND EXPRESSION.
Barbie Fashionistas 2009 by Mattel

In 2009, Barbie Fashionistas introduced a new generation of fashion dolls celebrating different styles, personalities and contemporary trends.

The first Fashionistas were particularly recognisable for their articulated bodies, which offered more freedom to pose and express their personalities.

As the collection evolved, Barbie continued experimenting with new looks, hairstyles and facial designs.

In 2015, the Fashionistas line also expanded its representation through new skin tones, hair colours and other design features, preparing the way for an even bigger transformation.

For me, these years mark an important transition between the Barbie I grew up with and the incredibly diverse universe that would emerge next.

And the Fashionistas revolution was only getting started!

04 — MODERN BARBIE

2016–TODAY
FASHIONISTAS & BEYOND.
Barbie Fashionistas since 2015 by Mattel

In 2016, Barbie Fashionistas reached a major turning point with the introduction of three new body types: Curvy, Petite and Tall, joining the Original silhouette.

This milestone opened the door to an increasingly diverse representation of beauty, with a growing variety of skin tones, hairstyles, facial features and body shapes.

Over the following years, Barbie continued exploring new creative directions, from the expressive fashion of Barbie Extra to contemporary collector collections such as Barbie Looks.

Meanwhile, Barbie Signature continues to celebrate fashion, artistic collaborations, iconic personalities and Barbie’s extraordinary heritage.

For me, Modern Barbie is an era of possibilities. With so many different faces, styles and personalities, it’s easier than ever to imagine new characters and tell our own stories.

Same Barbie universe. So many different ways to be Barbie!

PART TWO — EXPLORE THE COLLECTIONS

SO MANY STYLES. SO MANY PERSONALITIES. ONE BARBIE UNIVERSE!

Beyond the different eras of Barbie’s history, there are countless collections and doll lines, each with its own creative identity.

Some celebrate everyday fashion and individuality, others explore bold styling, highly articulated bodies or the art of collectible doll design.
Here are some of the collections that help me explore, understand and organise my own Barbie universe.

• FASHION, PLAY & PERSONALITY

Fashion, individuality and the art of self-expression.

BARBIE FASHIONISTAS

FASHION FOR EVERY PERSONALITY.

Introduced in 2009, Barbie Fashionistas has become one of the most recognizable collections in the Barbie universe.

Initially focused on contemporary fashion, different personalities and articulated bodies, the line underwent a major transformation in 2016 with the introduction of new body types.

Today, Fashionistas celebrates diversity through a wide variety of skin tones, face sculpts, body shapes, hairstyles and styles, including dolls representing different disabilities.

For me, Fashionistas is particularly interesting because of the incredible variety of dolls it offers. It’s also a wonderful starting point for creating new characters!

BARBIE DELUXE STYLE

A LITTLE EXTRA GLAMOUR!

Introduced in 2024, Barbie Deluxe Style brings a more glamorous approach to contemporary fashion dolls.

With eye-catching fabrics, statement accessories, carefully styled outfits and articulated joints, these dolls are all about creating a strong fashion look.

From metallic fabrics and oversized bows to bold jewellery and fashionable silhouettes, the collection celebrates the joy of dressing up.

Think runway-inspired style, with a generous dose of Barbie attitude!

BARBIE EXTRA

MORE IS MORE!

Launched in 2020, Barbie Extra celebrates individuality through extravagant fashion and unapologetically bold styling.

These dolls are known for their colourful outfits, layered accessories, expressive hairstyles and playful combinations of textures and trends.

The collection also introduced memorable animal companions with personalities just as extravagant as their owners!

Barbie Extra represents a particularly fun side of Barbie fashion: creative, expressive and never afraid to make a statement.

Because sometimes, being a little extra is exactly the point!

BARBIE MADE TO MOVE

Barbie Made To Move by Mattel

DESIGNED TO MOVE. MADE TO POSE.

Barbie Made to Move is a doll line centred around flexibility and highly articulated bodies.

With multiple movable joints, these dolls can adopt a remarkable variety of natural and dynamic poses.

Their articulation makes them particularly popular among collectors, doll photographers and customisers.

But remember: Made to Move is both the name of a Barbie doll line and a type of articulated body used in other collections, including Barbie Looks.

If you’d like to understand that distinction in more detail, you’ll find it explained in my Collector’s Glossary.

• THE BARBIE SIGNATURE UNIVERSE

Fashion, artistry and the magic of collectible Barbie dolls.

BARBIE SIGNATURE

WHERE BARBIE BECOMES A COLLECTOR’S STORY.

Barbie Signature brings together a wide range of collectible Barbie dolls designed to celebrate fashion, creativity, popular culture and the brand’s extraordinary heritage.

From tributes to inspiring personalities and artistic collaborations to reproductions of iconic vintage dolls, Barbie Signature explores many different sides of the Barbie universe.

It also includes distinct collections such as Barbie Looks, Barbie Basics and the Barbie Fashion Model Collection.

One important thing to remember: Barbie Signature is a broader collector category, not a single collection with one particular style.

And of course, being a Barbie Signature doll doesn’t automatically mean that a doll is rare or limited edition!

BARBIE BMR1959

Barbie BMR1959 by Mattel

STREETWEAR, SELF-EXPRESSION & A WHOLE LOT OF ATTITUDE!

Launched in 2019 to celebrate Barbie’s 60th anniversary, BMR1959 takes its name from Barbara Millicent Roberts, Barbie’s full name, and the year she made her debut.

Designed under the creative direction of Carlyle Nuera, the collection brings together contemporary streetwear, bold colours, oversized silhouettes and nostalgic influences from 1990s fashion.

With diverse face sculpts, different body types and highly articulated Made to Move bodies, BMR1959 celebrates individuality and the freedom to express your own style.

From neon outfits and statement sneakers to unexpected fashion combinations, every doll has a distinctive personality.

A little retro, a little rebellious, and definitely not afraid to break a few fashion rules!

BARBIE LOOKS

FASHION MODELS WITH ATTITUDE.

Barbie Looks is a fashion-focused collection within the Barbie Signature universe.

Known for its contemporary styling, diverse face sculpts, different body shapes and highly articulated Made to Move bodies, the collection offers a modern interpretation of fashion dolls.

Barbie Looks models are often presented in numbered releases and themed waves, with distinctive outfits and carefully considered visual identities.

They’re especially popular among doll photographers and collectors who enjoy restyling, posing and creating their own characters.

A fashion doll, a photographic model and sometimes the beginning of a whole new personality!

BARBIE HOLIDAY

A LITTLE CHRISTMAS MAGIC, YEAR AFTER YEAR!

Since 1988, when the first Happy Holidays Barbie made her debut, the Holiday collection has become one of Barbie’s most beloved annual traditions.

Known for its spectacular evening gowns, festive colours, glamorous accessories and beautifully designed packaging, each new release brings a little extra magic to the holiday season.

Over the years, the collection has evolved through different names, styles and interpretations, from the original Happy Holidays dolls to today’s Barbie Holiday editions.

With their elegant silhouettes and carefully crafted details, these dolls have become particularly popular among collectors who appreciate both fashion and tradition.

Because Christmas wouldn’t be quite the same without a little Barbie glamour under the tree!

BARBIE BASICS

SIMPLE STYLE. ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.

Originally introduced in 2010, Barbie Basics celebrates the elegance of essential wardrobe pieces and timeless fashion.

Its original collections explored the idea of classic fashion staples, beginning with the iconic little black dress.

The collection returned in 2025 with a renewed focus on versatile styling, articulated bodies and interchangeable wardrobe pieces.

Through its You Create concept, Barbie Basics also encourages collectors to experiment with different combinations of clothing, styling and doll components.

The beauty of Barbie Basics lies in its simplicity: classic pieces that leave plenty of room for creativity.

Sometimes, less really is more!

BARBIE INSPIRING WOMEN

Barbie Inspiring Women Ida B. Wells – by Mattel

REAL WOMEN. EXTRAORDINARY STORIES.

Barbie Inspiring Women is a collectible series celebrating remarkable women who have made significant contributions to history, culture, science, sports and society.

Through dolls inspired by real people, the collection highlights important achievements and introduces collectors to inspiring personal stories.

These dolls often feature carefully designed outfits, accessories and details connected to the women they represent.

For me, collections like Inspiring Women are a wonderful reminder that Barbie can be more than a fashion doll.

She can also be a way to celebrate the women who changed the world.

BARBIE FASHION MODEL COLLECTION (BFMC)

Barbie Pink Glamour – Bob Mackie by Mattel

TIMELESS ELEGANCE. COUTURE IN MINIATURE.

Introduced in 2000 and closely associated with designer Robert Best, the Barbie Fashion Model Collection celebrates classic fashion, sophisticated silhouettes and the glamour of haute couture.

The collection is particularly famous for its Silkstone dolls, made using a special material developed by Mattel to recreate the weight and refined feel of porcelain.

With vintage-inspired faces, elegant fashions and carefully designed accessories, these dolls have become highly recognisable among collectors.

The Fashion Model Collection also holds a special place in Barbie’s history for bringing together classic aesthetics and contemporary collectible doll design.

A little piece of fashion history, beautifully recreated in miniature.

BARBIE CELEBRITY DOLLS

WHEN REAL-LIFE ICONS BECOME BARBIE ICONS!

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Barbie collector universe is Mattel’s ability to bring real-life celebrities and cultural icons into the world of dolls.

From legendary singers and actors to athletes and influential personalities, these collectible dolls celebrate remarkable careers, unforgettable performances and iconic moments in popular culture.

Some feature specially sculpted faces designed to capture the celebrity’s likeness, along with carefully recreated hairstyles, makeup, outfits and accessories.

You’ll find these dolls across different Barbie Signature collections, including the Music Series, Tribute Collection and Role Models, rather than under one single official Celebrity Dolls line.

And while some dolls are officially created in a celebrity’s likeness, others may simply evoke the style or appearance of a famous personality.

For me, there’s something absolutely magical about recognising a familiar face in miniature — especially when Mattel manages to recreate an iconic look down to the smallest detail!
